Mary Ann Johnson

October 23, 1939 — April 9, 2025

Mary Ann Johnson, born in Topeka, Kansas on October 23, 1939, daughter of the late Util and Anna Lou (Wiltz) Duhon, passed away in Harbor Hospice, surrounded by her family on April 9, 2025, at the age of eighty-five.

Mary Ann worked for Lerner’s Dress Shop and Coco’s Shoes and later went to work at Stander’s Young Fashions when Leon and Rose Stander first opened in Lake Charles. When they retired, Mary Ann purchased the store and renamed it Mary Ann’s Standers.

Mary Ann was a devout Catholic. She was a lector and eucharistic minister at her church and spent countless hours helping with the spiritual needs in nursing homes. Mary Ann was a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) and received the Light of the Year award. She was also a member of the SERRA club and was awarded Serran of the Year. After closing Standers, she went to work at Catholic Charities. She retired, which lasted two days and became the Associate Director at the St. Charles Retreat Center.

She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Jimmy Duhon and Theresa Vidrine.

Mary Ann is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Hugh Filmore Johnson; children, Keith Paul Johnson, Lisa Ann LaFleur and husband, Paul, and Amanda Ann Vallery; grandchildren, Matthew Robin, Brittany Robin, Paula LaFleur, John LaFleur Christopher Johnson, Nathan Johnson and Kameron Johnson; great-grandchildren, Waylon Spangler, and Trey Sullivan.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church on Monday, April 14, 2025 at 2 p.m. Monsignor Jace Eskind and Rev. Whitney Miller, Celebrants. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery in Lake Charles under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa. Visitation will begin Sunday in the chapel of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. and will resume Monday in St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church at 12 p.m., with a rosary recited at 1:30 p.m.
