Mary Anne Westerman Day, 85, of Lake Charles, LA, died at 4:20 PM on Saturday, September 3, 2016 in a local care facility, surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Day was born June 23, 1931 in Hope, AR and shortly after graduating from Beaumont High School she settled down in Lake Charles. Her passion in child care began early on as a teacher at University Methodist Church. Throughout the years, it continued as she served as the founder and director for A Child’s World Day Care. She would also work intermittently for the family business, Day’s Café. She was active in several political campaigns throughout the years, including Richard Ieyoub and Ed Watson. Mrs. Day was a member of LACUS (Louisiana Association of Children Under Six), where she served as an officer for many years. When her children were younger, she always volunteered and helped with their various activities. She was a longtime member of Trinity Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School and served as a past director for the pre-school department. Mrs. Day was an avid reader, enjoyed painting, and was an amazing cook. She also enjoyed entertaining, but her true joy came from her family and her grandchildren.
Mrs. Day is survived by her husband of sixty-six years, Bill Day; children, William E. Day, II and wife Becky of League City, TX, Beckie Price of Lake Charles, Laura Waldmeier of Westlake, LA, Robert Paul Day and wife Melissa of Blue Ridge, GA, and Carol Day of Lake Charles; thirteen grandchildren; thirty-one great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Janie and Harry Edward Westerman; sister, Charlotte Pilkerton and husband Joe; brother, Harry Westerman, Jr.; and son-in-law, Keith Waldmeier.
Her funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Steve James will officiate. Burial will follow in Prien Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Monday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM and continue on Tuesday from 8:00 AM until the start of the service.
The family would like to express a special word of thanks to the staff and caregivers at Grand Cove and the Guardian House for the excellent care given.
