Mary Scalisi Niel

Mary Louise Scalisi Niel, 88, of Lake Charles, LA, passed away peacefully in the presence of family on Sunday, November 27, 2016 in Baton Rouge, LA.

She was born on February 19, 1928 to Dora and Luke Scalisi in Lake Charles, LA, where she was a lifelong resident.  Mary graduated from Lake Charles High School and Delta School of Business and Technology.  She served as the City of Lake Charles Building Inspector for thirteen years.  Mary was a devout Catholic and a longtime member of Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church and the Ladies Altar Society.  She especially enjoyed cooking for her husband and family.

She is survived by her daughter, Linda Niel Keene and husband Hollis of Baton Rouge, LA; son, Tony Niel and wife Jeaneen of Little Rock, AR; grandchildren, Holly Keene Foret and husband, Nik; Shannon Keene Landry and husband, Kevin; Anthony Niel and Destoni and Josh Niel and wife, Francesca; and great-grandchildren, Sophie Landry, Nicholas Landry, Jackson Foret, Hayes Foret, Aubri Niel, Vincent Niel and Delilah Niel.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Vincent Martin Niel; her parents; her sister, Rosemary Scalisi Shannon; and brothers, Joseph Scalisi and Jerome Scalisi.

The family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to her son-in-law, Hollis, who patiently cared for her during her last months of life.  Mary will be greatly missed by family and friends.

Visitation will be at Johnson’s Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 30, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM with recitation of the rosary at 6:00 PM.  Visitation will continue on Thursday, December 1, from 9:00 AM until Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:30 AM at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church.  Msgr. James Gaddy will officiate. Interment will follow at Consolata Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Hollis Keene, Anthony Niel, Nicholas Landry, Paul Mericle and Dr. Bryan Barootes.
