May Poché Gray

May Marguerite (nee Poché) Gray, beloved mother, grandmother, educator, volunteer, and lifelong learner, passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on July 28, 2026.

Born on January 17, 1942, in New Orleans, Louisiana, May was the daughter of Adolph Judson Poché and May Marguerite Levy Poché. From an early age, she embraced service, intellectual curiosity, and a fascination with the wider world. As a youth, she participated in Girl Scouts of the USA and a United Nations tour in New York, experiences that helped shape her lifelong commitment to education, civic engagement, and global understanding.

May graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in Education and later earned a Master of Business Administration from McNeese State University. After moving to Lake Charles in 1971, she became a cherished member of the community through her work at McNeese State University, where for decades she advanced lifelong learning through the SAGE (Select Activities for Global Enrichment) and Leisure Learning programs, McNeese Kid's College, educational travel programs, and community enrichment initiatives.

A dedicated civic leader, May devoted countless hours to organizations that promoted education, culture, community service, and informed citizenship. She served as President of the League of Women Voters and the Newcomers Club, Vice President of the American Association of University Women, was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Lake Charles, a member of the historic Review Club and the United Way Allocations Panel. Known throughout Lake Charles as a champion of learning and cultural enrichment, May inspired others through her warmth, generosity, and belief in the power of knowledge to improve lives. She loved travel, books, art, spirited conversations, and lifelong friendships. One of her greatest joys was the camaraderie she shared with the Laid-Back Bookies, a book club she proudly helped found.

Of all her accomplishments, May's greatest pride was her family. She is survived by her sons, Andrew (Katie) Gray, Christopher (Amanda) Gray, and Edward (Eva) Gray; her seven adored grandchildren, Maggie, Jack, and Henry Gray; Judson (Vanessa), Jackson (Devi), and Callie Gray; and Hunter Gray. She is also survived by her brother, Adolph Judson Poché, Jr., along with numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and her infant son.

May will be remembered for her intelligence, kindness, wit, and unwavering belief that education, civic participation, and compassion can make the world a better place. Her legacy of service, mentorship, and love will continue to inspire all who knew her.

In accordance with May's wishes, a private graveside service will be held at the Masonic Cemetery in New Orleans, Louisiana. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the United Way or to the charitable organization of your choice.
