Nancy Lee Keating

Nancy Lee Pickens Keating, 69, of Lake Charles, LA, died peacefully at home on October 24, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

 

Nancy was born on June 5, 1947 in Lake Charles, LA, and lived in Sulphur, LA until graduating from Sulphur High School in 1965.  Nancy attended McNeese State University where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority.  She graduated with a degree in Elementary Education and later earned a master’s degree.  She taught school for thirty-four years, most of those in first grade at Prien Lake Elementary.  Nancy was a lifetime member of Henning Memorial United Methodist Church.  She served on the board of the Brimstone Historical Society and board of Barbe High School Soccer, and she was a sustaining member of the Junior League of Lake Charles.  Nancy was a member of PEO Chapter AD, Ivy League Garden Club, Bosom Buddies Cancer Support Group and the Calcasieu Reading Council.  She worked on the Free to Breathe Committee and the local Arts Fest.  Nancy enjoyed great times with The Bookless Club, The Mixed Nuts, Friday Night Soccer Group and the SHS65 Girls’ Lunch Bunch.

 

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Lauren Kate Keating Britt and husband Joseph; son, Matthew Patrick Keating and wife Amanda; grandchildren, Rylee Claire Keating, Miles Patrick Keating, Alexander Cole Keating and Wells Patrick Britt; sister, Martha Pickens Hoskins and brother-in-law, David; brother James Scott Pickens; niece, Leah Hoskins and her children, Cameron, Sarah and Emily.  Also surviving are cousins, James Dwight Spates, Linda Spyres Douglass, Sally Spyres Barnett, and Steve Spyres.  She is also survived by a very special person, her children’s grandmother, Kathleen Wells Keating, and her family.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Genelle Spyres Pickens and James Thomas Pickens, Jr.; aunts and uncles, Dwight and Joyce Pickens Spates, El and Grace Pickens Busch, Lee and Jane Spyres; nephew, Micah Ward Hoskins; and cousins, Kay Busch Smith, Brenda Busch Moore, and Janie Busch Scheffler.

 

Her memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Wednesday, October 26, 2016 at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel, following a private burial.  Visitation will be the funeral home on Tuesday from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Louisiana Methodist Children’s Home, Brimstone Historical Society, Ethel Precht Hope Breast Cancer Foundation or a charity of your choice.
