Nelson Joseph Mott

February 2, 1930 — September 26, 2020

Nelson Joseph Mott, age 90, of Lake Charles, LA, passed away in Fruitland, ID on Saturday, September 26th surrounded by family.

Nelson was born on February 2, 1930 in Basile, LA to Adras Mott and Bertha Richard Mott Benoit.  At 16 years of age, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served in World War II and the Korean War as a cryptographic technician, Senior cryptographic operator, sergeant, and later staff sergeant.  He married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Mott in 1956 and had 3 children, Coy (Debbie) Mott, Karen (Larry) Mott Martin, and Tina (Mark) Mott Martin.  Although he called Louisiana home, Nelson and Pat also resided in California for part of their lives.  He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW and was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church.  His grandchildren have fond memories of his time working on the pig farm in California in the 1980s and spending their 50th wedding anniversary at his son’s house in Idaho, surrounded by family.  Later in life he could be found always tinkering with and fixing small things for others, enjoying a John Wayne movie, or a bingo game at Brookdale Assisted Living.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Ann Mott; his parents, Adras Mott and Bertha Richard Mott Benoit; his brothers, Wilfred and Wilmer Mott, his sisters, Lena Young, Bertha Truett, and Anna Mae Soileau.

Those left to cherish his memory are his 3 children, Coy (Debbie) Mott, Karen (Larry) Mott Martin, and Tina (Mark) Mott Martin; brothers, Adras Mott, Jr., Murray “Buddy” (Judy) Mott, and Richard “Jimmy” (Jackie) Mott, Sr.; sister, Helen (Earl) Holmes; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, and many beloved nieces and nephews.  Though he was known as Pawpaw Nelson, Grandpa Nelson, or Uncle Nelson to many more than just those bonded by blood.

The family would like to thank Brookdale Assisted Living and Southern Home Health of Lake Charles for caring for him for many years, as well as Brighton Bridge Hospice, and Heart ‘n Home Hospice in Fruitland, ID for their dedicated palliative care for Mr. Mott.

His funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, October 5, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Home of Moss Bluff.  Deacon Leo Hebert will officiate.  Burial will follow in Ritchie Cemetery.  Friends and family will gather at the funeral home on Sunday from 4:00 PM with a rosary at 6:00 PM.  Visitation will continue on Monday from 9:00 AM until the start of the service.
