Nelson Moss is survived by his loving family, including his sons Ryan Vincent Moss, Brandon Stuart Moss, and Marcus Jerome Moseley and his wife, Tashonna; his daughter Sara Kristen Moss-McDow and her husband, Mark; and his cherished grandchildren Liam, Noah, and Owen (children of Ryan), Kairo and Mathias (children of Marcus and Tashonna), and Annie and Emily (children of Sara and Mark). He also leaves behind his brother Neil Moss and his wife, Bonnie, along with his second wife, Lori Hinton Moss.
Nelson was preceded in death by his parents, Evelyn Hall and Vincent Moss; his brother Noel Moss and Noel’s wife, Nancy; his sisters Janet Molinario and Joyce Moss; and his first wife, Marcie LaFleur Moss Mecklenburg.
A proud graduate of LaGrange High School (Class of 1967), Nelson went on to attend McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana. While there, he became one of the thirteen founding members of the Delta Xi Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Order (established October 24, 1969). He served as Freshman Class President and was active in the Debate Team. Nelson was inspired by the spirit of “Excelsior” — onward and upward — a fitting tribute to his lifelong pursuit of growth, excellence, and brotherhood.
After earning his bachelor’s degree in physics in 1971, Nelson began his career as an engineer in the oil industry, working with companies such as Schlumberger and Aminol. In 1987, he transitioned into real estate and built a successful commercial appraisal business that served the community for decades. Over the years, he was an engaged member of professional organizations, including the Appraisal Institute and the National Association of Realtors. His son Brandon apprenticed under him and later became a Certified General Appraiser, carrying forward Nelson’s commitment to integrity and excellence.
Nelson often reminded his family that “all we are is dust in the wind.” In keeping with his wishes, his ashes will be scattered over the mountains in Telluride, Colorado, a place he held dear.
Memorial services will be held at 1:00 PM Monday, October 27, 2025 in the Chapel of Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles. Family and friends will gather to honor his memory from 10:00 AM until the time of service in the funeral home.
