Paul Larry Verret

July 12, 1937 — December 3, 2025

Paul Larry Verret, 88, of Lake Charles passed away at 2:23 AM on Wednesday, December 3, 2025 in a local hospital.

Mr. Verret was born on July 12, 1937, in Lake Charles, Louisiana. After being drafted into the U.S. Army as a young man, he proudly completed his high school education while serving his country as a baker. Upon returning home, he worked as a truck driver for Southern Pacific Transport, spent years on the water as a commercial shrimper and boat captain, and later became a successful entrepreneur whose skills and work ethic were admired by many.

A man of many talents, he was also an accomplished gardener who could coax life from any patch of soil. With equal enthusiasm, he could be found repairing a lawn mower, tending to his plants, or sharing a laugh-always ready with a joke and always eager to teach those around him the art of gardening and the joy of not taking life too seriously.

He was a devoted member of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, where his faith remained a guiding force throughout his life. He was also an active member of the AACA car club and the Calcasieu Investment Club.

Some of his happiest moments were spent at Toledo Bend, enjoying the peaceful water, good company, and the simple pleasures he cherished. He also had a love for antique cars.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 65 years, Jean Ellen Johnson Verret; children, Paula Stevens, Richard Verret, Lucas Verret (Stacy), and Mary Krebs (Richard); sister, Mildred Debarge; grandchildren, Paul Fontenot, Lucas Cole Verret (Emily), Lee Stevens, III "Trey", Larry Stevens "Tony", Brittainy Verret, Amy Stevens, Isabella Krebs, Mason Krebs, Peyton Krebs, and Benjamin Stevens; great grandchildren, Ava Mock, Amelia Garner, and Aurora Fontenot.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rena and Numa Verret, Jr. and siblings, Joseph Leroy Verret, C.A. Verret, Geneva Jennings, Rose Fontenot, Shirley Burwell, James Carroll Verret, and Mary Toler.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, December 5, 2025 in the Johnson Funeral Home chapel in Lake Charles. Monsignor Jace Eskind will officiate. Burial will follow in Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11:00 AM and continue until the start of the service with a rosary being recited at 1:00 PM.
