Phyllis "Smurf" Wilson

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Clara “Phyllis” Wilson, also known to many as Smurf, who passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home surrounded by dear family and friends on July 23, 2026, at the age of 77. Her life was defined by unwavering strength, fierce love, generous spirit, and steadfast faith.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter, Stephanie Wilson of Sulphur, granddaughter, Amber Wilson (Justin Marcantel), grandson, Ty Wilson, great grandchildren, Raelynn and Henry Marcantel: her brother, Ronald “Fudge” Fruge (Bertha) of Bell City, brother in Law, Buddy Wilson (Kathy) of Sulphur, her beloved Prince family, treasured neighbors, Blayne, Melanie, Austen and her best friend, Gracie Landry; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Wilson, her son, Johnathon Wilson, Mother and Father, Johnice Fruge, Sr. and Louella Derouen Fruge, In Laws, Charles and Majorie Wilson, Sister and brother-in-Law, Patty and Laris Borne, brothers, Johnice Fruge, Jr., Jimmy Fruge and Gary Fruge, her nephew, Chris Borne and her beloved boss of over 30 years, Mr. Robert McCall.

Phyllis was born and raised in the small community of Bell City, where she developed the strength, determination, and love of softball that would remain with her throughout her life. After marrying the love of her life, she made Sulphur her home, where she spent the majority of her years. Though Bell City would always be where her story began, Sulphur became the place where she built her life, raised her family, and formed lifelong friendships. She embraced her community wholeheartedly, and if you didn't know her story, you would have thought she had been born and raised there. She carried the same deep Sulphur Tor pride that so many lifelong residents do.

For more than 30 years, she dedicated herself as a paralegal at Baggett McCall, where her hard work, loyalty, and commitment earned the respect of her colleagues and all who knew her professionally. She believed in doing things the right way, worked tirelessly, and took great pride in everything she did. Her coworkers also knew that Elvis’s music would be played at the office on January 8th and August 16th every year for Elvis’ birth and death as Phyllis was a huge Elvis fan.

Her greatest accomplishment, however, was the family she loved so fiercely. She had a servant's heart and found joy in caring for others, whether through a warm meal, a listening ear, or simply showing up whenever someone needed her. She was generous beyond measure and never hesitated to put the needs of those she loved before her own.

An exceptional cook and baker, her kitchen was one of the many ways she expressed her love. Her chocolate chip cookies, peanut butter cookies, and brownies became legendary among family and friends. She especially enjoyed baking for her Sulphur Tor athletes she supported over the years, making sure they always knew someone was cheering them on.

She was a woman of strong convictions, old-school values, and unwavering morals. She believed honesty was an expression of love, even when it wasn't easy to hear. If you asked for her opinion, you knew you would get the truth. She never sugarcoated her words, and she would often remind those she loved that "nothing good happens after midnight." Her determination, resilience, and yes, her stubbornness, were qualities that shaped her into the remarkable woman everyone knew and loved.

A faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sulphur, she lived a life rooted in faith, kindness, and service. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew her simply and lovingly as "Mimi," a name that became synonymous with unconditional love, homemade treats, and unwavering support.

Some of her fondest memories are the simplest ones: sitting in the garage with her beloved daughter and treasured neighbors, old-school music playing in the background while she sang every word and danced without hesitation. Those moments perfectly captured her spirit—full of life, laughter, and happiest when surrounded by the people she loved.

Her legacy is one of strengths, honesty, generosity, resilience, and unconditional love. Though our hearts are broken by her absence, we are forever grateful for the example she set and the countless lives she touched. Her lessons, her laughter, her music, her recipes, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on through her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her.

She will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and lovingly remembered.

Services for Phyllis will be held on Thursday, July 30, 2026, at 11 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Tim Goodly officiating. Burial will be at Derouen Cemetery in Hayes. The family will receive friends on Thursday at Johnson Funeral Home in Sulphur from 8:30 AM until we leave for the church at 10:30 AM. A rosary will be prayed at 9:45 AM at the funeral home.

The family would like to extend gratitude and apperception to Cal Cam Home Health, the nurses and staff at West Cal Cam Hospital and Brighton Bridge Hospice.
