A Latin Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am on Friday, March 6, 2026 at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church for Richard D. Moreno, 75, who passed away at 10:13 pm CST/ 2:13 ChST at Harbor Hospice on March 2, 2026, surrounded by family and friends. Father D.B. Thompson will officiate the services. The family is requesting a gathering of Family and friends at Johnson Funeral Home in Lake Charles on Thursday from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm, with a rosary service beginning at 6:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Friday from 8:00 am until 8:45 am when leaving for the Cathedral. Interment services will be at Consolata Cemetery.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Mary Melanie Denton Moreno, their only child, Victoria Moreno-Jackson (Cullen) of Greer, SC and two grandchildren, Connor Dale Jackson and Riordan Melaine Jackson. He is also survived by his siblings, Kenneth Michael Moreno (Beryl), Marc Anthony Moreno, Louis Norman Moreno (Donna), Evelyn Anderson, Patrick Keith Moreno and Shirley Faye Moreno White (David). He is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was predeceased by his parents, Fred Mercica Moreno and Elsie Mae Savant and his brother, David Neal Moreno.
He was a dedicated husband and father, steadfast in his Catholic faith, which sustained him these past few difficult weeks. However, his impact around the state extended much further.
Although he originally graduated from La. Tech University in 1972 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Richard pivoted to the law, graduating with multiple honors from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center in Baton Rouge in 1991. He left an indelible mark on the field of Matrimonial Regimes, specifically community property law. He co-authored for many years with Prof. Andy Carroll the Louisiana Civil Law Treatise on Matrimonial Regimes. The multiple practitioners around the State who relied on Richard for his counsel, intellect and friendship will miss him greatly.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception or your favorite charity.
