Roger Perez, Sr., 90, of Sulphur passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2016. Roger was born in McFaddin, Texas in 1926. He was the oldest of 13 children and had resided in Sulphur since 1962 where he attended the Spanish services of Grace Baptist Church. In 1992, Roger retired from Mike Hooks Dredging Company (Westlake, LA) after 32 years of service. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served on the USS Tallulah in WWII (Asiatic-Pacific Campaign) from 1944 to 1945. He was also a U. S. Army veteran having served with the 9th Infantry Division in the Korean War in 1953, having attained the rank of Sergeant at the time of his discharge in 1954. For combat action in Korea, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and was a recipient of the Purple Heart Medal and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge.
Roger enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and cooking which included the world’s best pancakes and tortillas for his grandchildren. He was proud to have served his great Country in two conflicts and enjoyed living in the Sulphur community where, over the years, he and his wife had many lifelong friends and memories.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Santiago and Trinidad Perez of De Leon, Texas, two sisters, Lillie Jimenez and Laverne Hamre and one grandson, William David Lundy. He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Lydia Perez of Sulphur, three children: Lenda (Perry) Vincent of Westlake, Roger, Jr. (Shawn) of Sulphur and Lillian (Mark) Lundy of Lake Charles, nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Colonial Funeral home in Victoria, TX on Wednesday, December 21st from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a eulogy at 6:00 pm.
The family wishes to express its sincerest thanks to the staffs of Landmark of Lake Charles nursing home, Oceans Behavioral Hospital in Lake Charles and to the Behavioral Unit of Dequincy Memorial Hospital.
