Roy "RJ" Benoit Jr. Obituary

Roy Joseph Benoit Jr. was born January 12, 1945 and left his earthly life December 31, 2025. Roy was raised in Lake Charles, Louisiana and was a graduate of Landry Memorial High School where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He was a resident of Moss Bluff, Louisiana for over 40 years and a parishioner of St. Theodore Catholic Church.

Upon graduation, Roy joined the seminary where he studied his Catholic faith for 7 years. He eventually left the seminary and joined the United States Navy where he proudly served his country for 27 years as an Aviation Fire Control Technician, completing a total of 4 tours of duty aboard the U.S.S. Midway. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer 1st Class.

As a service connected disabled veteran, he was a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans Louis I Lust Chapter 17 post and devoted over 20 years of his retirement volunteering as a driver and service officer helping other disabled veterans understand benefits, services and programs and to assist with benefit enrollment. He devoted many Mondays to driving the DAV van assisting veterans to medical appointments at the VA in Alexandria, LA where he received a VA Volunteer service award for driving over 77,000 miles. He was honored to transport the first official DAV van for the state of Louisiana from headquarters in Virginia. He was also an active member and Post Commander of the VFW Post 7321 and 1st Vice Commander of the American Legion, Post 1.

Roy's hobbies included boating, fishing and shrimping with some occasional duck hunting. Many Saturday mornings he would often wake up long before the sun and head to Calcasieu Lake for shrimping or a run to the Grand Wier, especially if the redfish were biting. He also enjoyed tinkering on vehicles and engines and throwing baseballs with his kids in the front yard. He enjoyed the companionship of the family German shepherd, Buddy. He enjoyed oldies music and dancing. In his later life he enjoyed the stories of the Alaskan Bush people and enjoyed a bucket list trip to Alaska. He found great interest in studying the writings of the prophets and conversations about salvation.

Roy is survived by his son Roy Joseph Benoit III of Moss Bluff, daughter Jennifer Denise Benoit Mathes and husband Daniel Mathes of Baton Rouge, former wife Patricia Deville Benoit of Baton Rouge, step son Michael Silva of Moss Bluff, sister Mary Williams of Scott, grandchildren Emile, Landry, Mia, Amelia and Jaci, goddaughter Mary Katherine Trahan and his nieces and nephews and their families.
