Shirley Chappius Bonin

Shirley Chappius Bonin left this world to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 17, 2017.

Shirley Chappuis Bonin was born in Rayne, Louisiana on July 31, 1932.  

She attended SLI and was a drum majorette, and went on to serve as a stewardess for Delta Airlines.

Shirley was a member of many charitable organizations, including the Junior League of Lake Charles, Inc., and Dental Auxiliary.  She was a founding member and long-time captain of the Krewe of Mystique.  

Always the life of the party, she was truly one of a kind. Shirley enjoyed entertaining and social engagements of all kinds, traveling, painting, entertaining, and many outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing. A favorite pastime was Bridge, playing weekly with the same dear friends for over 60 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Allie Andrus Stansel and August Louis Chappuis, her husband Dr. Louis Joseph Bonin, and son Gary Joseph Bonin.

Her family wishes to thank her many wonderful caregivers, Heart of Hospice, and Home Instead. They would also like to express special appreciation to her devoted and loving friends that contributed so much to her wonderful life.

Survivors are her brother, August Louis Chappuis, and her children, Paul Bonin and wife Olive, Kathryn (Kit) Bonin Lalonde and husband Gary, Carrie Bonin Dondis and husband Nathan, 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Shirley’s Funeral Mass will be on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 10:00 AM, at The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Monsignor Harry Greig, Monsignor Jace Eskind, and Monsignor Charles Dubois will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday, December 18, 2017 at Johnson Funeral Home at 4:00 PM until 6:30 PM with a rosary being recited at 5:30PM. Visitation will resume on Monday morning at 8:30 AM at Johnson Funeral Home.
