Songia Jewell Miller, 59, daughter of Clem Thomas and Helen (Essex) McKay, born September 4, 1958, passed away November 9, 2017.
She is survived by her daughters, Ciwana Miller Williams (Joseph), Lela Henderson; dear friend, Martha Jefferson; step-son, Michael Campbell; siblings, Sheraton McKay, Alfred Keith McKay (Sharon), Randall Johnson (Phyllis), Theresa Brush, Dr. Glenda Richardson, Renee McKay and Collette McKay; grandchildren, Ebony Miller, Laakyn Pattum, Yahaira and DeMarcus Reed, Jerald Henderson, Jr. and Raeon Williams; great-grandson, Peyton Guidry, and her sister-in-law, Pat Johnson.
She is preceded in death by her parents; siblings, Sandra Hinton, Angela McKay and Vernon Johnson; son-in-law, Jerald Henderson, Sr.
A Mass of Christian burial will be in St. Raphael Catholic Church on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. with Father Jude Fernando officiating. Cremation will follow the Mass under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Visitation is Saturday from 8 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home. Pallbearers assisting in her service are, Jerry Hinton, Joseph Williams, Lawerence Nash, James Malveaux, Donovan and Dylan McKay; Honorary, DeMarcus Reed, Jerald Henderson, Jr., Sheraton McKay, Randall Johnson, Larry Miller, Brian Bellard and Alfred Keith McKay.
She was graduate of Iowa High School and attended Sowela Technical College. Songia was a casino host for Delta Downs and a former supervisor the Player’s Club at L’auberge. Her interests included cooking, knitting, watching cooking shows feeding the community and tending to her plants. She also had a food truck, Helen’s Kitchen. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and wonderful friend to all.
