Steven Smudricks

Jul 29, 1977 — Jul 17, 2026

Steven Wade Smudricks, 48, passed away on July 17, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. Steven was born on July 29, 1977, in Lake Charles, LA, to John and Louise Smudricks. A carpenter by trade, he worked side by side with his dad at J&H construction for over 30 years. They remodeled Evergreen Plantation and many other fine homes across SWLA with Flavin Construction. Steven was an avid fisherman and participated in many semi-professional tournaments. Even if he didn’t catch the big one, he was just happy to cast a line. He also enjoyed duck and deer hunting and four-wheeler adventures with family and friends. A close second to hunting season was football season. He loved an LSU tailgate or a Monday night football party. He was also a die-hard foodie who was always looking for a new recipe to try. It brought him great joy to prepare and share a meal with others. His hobby was collecting and refurbishing cast iron and magnalite pots. He enjoyed the thrill of finding them at garage and estate sales on weekends. Lately, with his parents, he re-ignited his passion for gardening, but somehow those strawberry plants always got the best of him.

Steven is survived by his parents, John and Louise Smudricks; sister, Leslie Aronson and husband, Damien; children, Courtney Jarrett and husband, Tyler and Chance Smudricks; grandchildren, Maddox and Maverick Jarrett; girlfriend, Janice Patton; nieces, Ashley Gonzalez and husband, Andruws and Lindsey Campbell; and many cousins and friends who loved him like a brother. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Carvin and Josephine Smudricks; maternal grandparents, Laura and Nolan Bunch; and his Aunt Lenda Smudricks.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 4-7 PM at Johnson Funeral Home of Sulphur. Cremation has been entrusted to Johnson Funeral Home of Sulphur, LA.

The family would like to thank Dr. Paul Mansfield and his P.A. Madison at MD Anderson and also Ashley Schexnider, his oncologist, Dr. Fredericks; and his NP, Lacey Stickell from Memorial Hospital and the entire team of chemo nurses. They all cared for Steven with great love and empathy.
