Sylvia Delord (Grosze) Schroll, 86, of Lake Charles, passed away suddenly on Thursday March 9, 2017 in Lake Charles.
Sylvia was born in New Orleans and was a longtime resident of Lake Charles. She was a graduate of St. Charles Academy, and attended McNeese Jr College on an academic scholarship. While at McNeese, she was elected Ms. McNeese, and Rodeo Queen, even though she was afraid of horses. Following graduation from college in 1949, Sylvia began working in the secretarial pool at Cities Service. After beginning having children, Sylvia stayed at home to care for her young family. Following the birth of her youngest child, she returned to McNeese and obtained her Education Credentials in 1969. She began teaching with the Calcasieu Parish School Board at Brentwood School in the 1969-1970 school year. In 1975, she obtained her Master’s degree in Counseling and Guidance. She later went on to teach SPARK at Oak Park Middle School and ultimately concluded her career from Pearl Watson in 1997.
Sylvia was very active in her church and community. She actively took a role at Our Lady of Good Counsel, where she was on the Pro-Life Council, and attended mass regularly. She was a lay-Eucharist minister at the Southwest Louisiana Veteran’s Home in Jennings, where her husband John was a resident. Even following John’s death, she still served the residents until she could no longer physically do so. She still actively met regularly with her high school and new girl friends, enjoying lunch, cards, dominos and keeping up with each other.
Sylvia enjoyed reading, and driving her own car and was deep rooted in her faith and independence. She rarely embraced technology, but did enjoy using facetime to see her new great grandchildren who were at a distance.
Preceding Sylvia in death are her parents, Omar Aubrey and Thyria Mascaro Delord; step mother, Mary Pitts Delord; brother, Bertrand Delord; and father of her children, Theodore Fredrick Grosze. She leaves as her legacy her six children, Mark Grosze, Bailey, NC; ; Martha Williams and husband Ray, Houston, TX; Ann Bailey and husband Dr. Vince, Jennings, LA; Andrew Grosze, Wilmington, NC; Mary Elizabeth Paul and husband Dr. Thomas; Germany and Cynthia Jeter and husband Robert, Lake Charles; thirteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. A Rosary is to be recited at 12:00 noon and a Mass of Christian Burial is to be observed at 1:00 PM at our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church with Monsignor Vincent Sedita serving as celebrant, assisted by Deacon Glenn Viau.
