Velma P. Binkley

Velma P. Binkley, was born on July 3, 1948, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and passed away on October 31, 2024. She was the beloved daughter of Mandi Jones and loving sister to Esther Mae Davis, Dorothy Cross-Hill, Thelma Jones and Nelson Davis.

Velma was raised in Lacassine, and attended school in Welsh and graduated from Bethune High School as salutatorian in 1967, all while overcoming the life-changing event of becoming a mother to her first child, Xavier Pete, in 1966. Seeking higher education, Velma moved to Detroit, Michigan, to join her sister Dorothy Cross. She earned an Associate Degree in Data Entry from Wayne State University and began to build a life of purpose and resilience. In 1975, Velma embraced her faith as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses after being introduced by Lorraine Brooks. Shortly thereafter, she relocated to Houston, Texas, to live near her brother, Nelson Davis. It was there where she met and married James Binkley in 1977. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Naomi D’Mandi Binkley, in 1978. Velma returned to Lacassine in 1981 to be closer to her family. She worked at PPG Industries and joined the local Jehovah’s Witness congregation in Jennings, Louisiana, where she began her pioneering ministry work, spreading the Good News. Despite surviving a devastating fire accident in 1991, Velma’s faith remained unwavering. She returned to her ministry work and attended Pioneer School. In 1995, Velma moved to Texas City, Texas, to ensure her daughter could receive treatment at Shriners Hospital in Galveston. She continued her ministry as an Auxiliary Pioneer in the Texas City congregation. After the heartbreaking loss of her daughter, Velma returned to Louisiana in 2011, settling in Lake Charles. She remained dedicated to her ministry and her family until her health no longer allowed her to serve actively. Velma spent her final years at the Lake Charles Care Center, surrounded by the love of her family.

She leaves behind her son, Xavier Pete; her grandchildren, Janae, Kiran, Julian, Kai, and Kalea Pete; her great-grandchildren, Karson and Kacson Pete; and her sister, Dorothy Cross-Hill.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Mandi Jones; her husband, James Binkley; her daughter, Naomi Binkley; her twin sister, Thelma Jones; her sister, Ester Mae Davis. and brother Nelson Davis.

Velma’s life was a testament to her faith, love, and resilience. Her dedication to Jehovah’s work and her family leaves an enduring legacy. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

A Celebration of Life will be held in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at 2 p.m. Elder Knight, celebrant A gathering of friends and family will begin in the funeral home from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. As per her request, her cremation has been entrusted to Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa.
