Verlise Hollier Reed

December 29, 1925 — July 21, 2017

Verlise Hollier Reed, 91, died Friday, July 21, 2017, in her residence following a long and beautiful life.

Born to Gustave and Nata Guillory Hollier in Mamou, Louisiana, Mrs. Reed was a graduate of Mamou High School, moving to Lake Charles in 1942. She was a loving, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Reed was a member of St. Margaret Catholic Church.

She is survived by her daughter, Christy Reed Jordan (Phil) of Mandeville, her granddaughter, Elise Jordan, of Baton Rouge and her step-grandson, Chris (Kit, Sawyer 17, Luke 13) of Magnolia, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Clinton Hollier (Catherine), her beloved husband of 56 years, Harry Reed and her son, Barry Michael Reed.

Her focus and desire was working alongside her husband to build the life they dreamed of. Foremost, there were her children and all their activities; totally devoted to providing them with every opportunity. She enjoyed Bridge, cooking (always loved a good gumbo), entertaining, gardening (green thumb), decorating (interior and seasonal) and was always the fashion statement. In their retirement, among other things, she and Harry enjoyed travel including annual trips to Destin (with family/friends) and activities with friends in the local Power Squadron.

A mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017, at St. Margaret Catholic Church under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Msgr. Charles DuBois will officiate. Entombment will be at Consolata Cemetery. Visitation will be at the funeral home on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m., with a rosary to be recited at 10 a.m.

The family would like to express their appreciation for the compassionate care given their mother while residing at Villa Marie. The staff created a safe, caring home and second family for her over the past years. Special gratitude to caregivers/guardian angels, Lillie Chambers, Hollie Fuselier, Nadine Rayon, Gwen Robinson and Jennifer Benoit.

The family expresses additional gratitude to Heart of Hospice for the support and care provided to her and her family in her final months.

Memorial donations may be made to Edna Gladney Center for Adoption, 6300 John Ryan Drive, Ft. Worth, TX 76132 or Catholic Social Services for Adoption, 1408 Carmel Drive, Lafayette, LA 70501.
