Waldene Bettis Salter, 91, of Lake Charles, passed away Saturday December 15, 2018 at a local care facility surrounded by her beloved family.
Waldene, born December 8, 1927, was a native of Winnie, Texas and a longtime resident of Lake Charles. She was a graduate of East Chambers County Consolidated Independent School District, where she played basketball and was a 1946 Texas state player. She also graduated from T.H. Harris Vocational School and Lamar University. Waldene worked as a Certified Dietary Manager at Moss Bluff Manor, Resthaven and retired from Grand Cove.
Waldene enjoyed sewing, cooking, traveling and watching the Houston Astros play baseball and watching the weather channel. She was a member of Bellview Baptist Church in Westlake.
Preceding Waldene in death are her parents, Sergeant Ferris and Lucy Aline Slaughter Bettis; her husband of sixty-one years, John Clifton Salter; siblings, Wanda Davis, Ferris Bettis, Jr., her twin, Walter Bettis and Robert Bettis. She is cherished in memory by her four daughters, Susan Ann Galicia (Fredy), Lake Charles. Sandra Lea Berry, Kyle, TX, Shelya Faye Langley (Lester), Lake Charles; and Sallye A. Salter (Shari), Moss Bluff; a brother-in-law, Dave Salter; a sister-in-law Marie Bettis; sixteen grandchildren, thirty-eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Visitation will be Tuesday December 18, 2018 from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM with a funeral Service to be held at 1:00 PM at Johnson Funeral Home. The Rev. John Ward will officiate. Burial will follow at Consolata Cemetery.
Those serving as pallbearers will be Chip Cagle, Freddy Galicia, Nick Langley, Jordan Langley, Jarett Langley and Blaine Williams.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt appreciation to the nurses and staff of Brookdale Assisted Living, the Veranda and Amedisys Hospice, especially Monique, for the compassionate loving care shown to our beloved Waldene and our family in this past few weeks.
In Lieu of Flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
