Walter Deshotel Jr.

June 14, 1942 — February 4, 2023

Walter Deshotel, Jr., born June 14, 1942, son of the late Walter Deshotel, Sr., and Lucinda Manuel Deshotel, passed away February 4, 2023, in a local hospital at the age of 80.

Walter was a 1961 graduate of Oberlin High School and attended Sowela Technical School. He served in the U. S. National Guard.

Walter was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He followed in his family’s footsteps by becoming a rice and soybean farmer for most of his life. After many years, he retired from farming and began a career at the Coushatta Casino in Kinder until his retirement.

Walter enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren participating in sports and activities, meeting friends in the mornings for coffee at McDonalds, and camping with his wife and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lucinda Manuel Deshotel; brother, Herman Deshotel; sisters, Thelma Bartlett, Esyleta Langley, and Geneva Deshotel.

Survivors are his wife of 6 years, Juanita Deshotel; daughters, Catherine (Johnny) Guillory, Christine Landry, Cherie (Bobby) Matt, Candace Deshotel, and Crystal (Chris) Boyd; step-children, Ronnie (Fiona) Hardy, Brian (Pam) Hardy, Stephen (Melanie) Hardy, Jason (Karen) Hardy, and Dina (Rex) Royer; 20 grandchildren, and an abundance of great-grandchildren, and his beloved dog, Fancy.

Pallbearers assisting in his service are grandsons, Justin Landry, Brandon Guillory, Chase Guillory, step-sons, Ronnie Hardy, Brian Hardy, and Jason Hardy.

A Mass of Christian burial will be in St. John the Evangelist Catholic on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 at 11 a.m. Rev. Jom Joseph and Deacon James Dale Deshotel, Celebrants. Burial will follow in Lacassine Cemetery under the direction of Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa. Visitation begins in Johnson & Brown Funeral Home of Iowa on Tuesday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m., with a rosary recited at 6:30 p.m. and will resume Wednesday in the funeral home from 8 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.
